Flash Forward: Arabic Vocabulary ReviewFor what it costs, this Arabic vocabulary CD-ROM is okay, but it easily could have been better. On the positive side, it offers a well-selected group of vocabulary words and the audio files are clear and easy to understand, which is great because that's not always the case with other Arabic language study products. It also includes a clear photograph of the object on each digital vocabulary card, which makes flashcard study more interesting and engaging, and it probably helps with recall.
On the negative side, the vocabulary set is fairly limited--I would have expected probably twice as many words as are actually covered. There just aren't enough words included to make this a truly valuable tool. Also, the English transliteration of the Arabic word appears next to the Arabic script wherever the Arabic script appears. Since I'm comfortable with Arabic script, I find it really distracting because my eye does get pulled to the English transliteration, almost involuntarily, and it's a crutch that makes learning the language harder in the long run. If it were possible to turn off that particular feature, I'd be much happier with this product. Also, my PC doesn't seem to like the CD-ROM but it works fine on my Mac. That could very well be a problem with my computer, not with this CD-ROM, though.

There is nothing else I have found anywhere that comes close to this in thoroughness and versatility for learning ALL forms of Arabic verbs. The amount of conjugations is amazing. Look at it, print it, listen to it, record it, export it, write notes on it, autoplay it as you do soemthing else... very cool.
One of the most useful parts is the quiz generator - all kinds of settings for customizing how you want the computer to quiz you.
Also cool is that it is the first in the series to be Mac OS X compatible. Where most language learning books simply transliterate words phonetically, this software actually lets you HEAR the words spoken by an Egyptian as you see them on the screen (written in Arabic, in English transliteration, and the English equivalent). A Grammar of the Arabic Language Combined Volume Paperback (v. 1 & 2) ReviewFirst, anyone considering this book needs to understand that this is a reference grammar, not a textbook for learning Arabic. The material is arranged by parts of speech and by grammatical concepts, not as a series of lessons going from simple to more complicated. There are no exercises and no excerpts for reading practice (although all discussions of grammar and semantics are illustrated by examples). The level of the book is not for beginners.
The main drawback is a level of unneeded complexity that is maintained in many sections of the book by the use of Latin grammatical terms and by trying to look at Arabic through the concepts of English grammar. The chapters on Syntax are especially notable for this. It is there that we find such gems of clarity
as :
If two *correlative* clauses follow the
hypothetical particles law (if), law 'anna
(if that), lawlaa, lawmaa and lawlam (if not), [*]
the verbs in both clauses have usually the
significance of our pluperfect subjunctive
or potential, though occasionally too of our
imperfect subjunctive or potential.
This is further "clarified" by the footnote:
[*] The protasis of a sentence, when introduced
by lawlaa, although it may not have a verb
actually expressed, yet includes a verbal idea,
viz. that of the verb kaana.
This creates the impression that Arabic hypothetical sentences are super-complex, and their meanings are difficult to grasp. In fact, there is nothing particularly hard about the sentences used to illustrate this discussion, and most of the difficulty comes from trying to arrange English and Arabic into parallel structures. I find it hard to recommend the Syntax section of the book, which has pages upon pages of such explanations. But many other parts (such as the discussion of the forms of the verb) are lucid and helpful, probably because there aren't any English parallels to get in the way.
I also find that the fonts and the typesetting are not great. Looking at the pages for a long time fatigues the eyes.
I feel that I must mention that the price ... seems unreasonably high to me.
In summary, the book is good, but make sure that this is what you want.A Grammar of the Arabic Language Combined Volume Paperback (v. 1 & 2) OverviewDr Wright's translation of Caspari's Arabic Grammar first appeared in 1859. Since that time it has been thoroughly revised and enlarged, and has become the standard authority. Volume I contains sections on orthography and pronunciation, on the verb, the noun and adjective, on numerals, prepositions, adverbs and conjunctions. Volume II deals with syntax and prosody.

A Study of the Assimilation and Substitution in Arabic ReviewThis is a very detailed and scientific analysis of two linguistic phonological changes that can affect the word in Arabic: the first one is known as the Assimilation and the second one as the Substitution.
This assimilation occurs most commonly in the doubled verbs, which have two identical letters in their forms, e.g madada "to stretch" that becomes madda. It also occurs in some perfect verbs of Form V, Form VI and Form VIII and in two words following each other. In these cases, the words can have two identical or two different letters in their structures. The condition for the assimilation is that the letters should originate from one common point of articulation or from two points of articulation which are close to each other.
The substitution of one letter for another occurs in a word if there is a specific heaviness in it, which among other things, could be caused by the disliked combination of two letters or by a specific vowel vowelling a letter.
Akesson has thoroughly explored most of the cases in which these linguistic phenomena occur by presenting and discussing a rich data of examples and theories and by referring to well-know linguists from the 8th century until our days.

Arabic Grammar: A First Workbook ReviewI disagree strongly with the other review: let's face it, the subject itself (Arabic grammar) is what is tedious, not Wickens' book! In fact, I have always appreciated the way he tries to liven up a deadly-dull, but necessary subject. Throughout the book are many tips and personal thoughts from the author, and I would recommend Arabic Grammar as the best book out there. Remember, this book is a grammar, with all the paradigms and minutiae that "grammar" implies, but Wickens keeps it as lively as any grammar I've seen. Highly recommended!Arabic Grammar: A First Workbook OverviewStandard Arabic - the language of educated discourse throughout the Arab world - presents difficulties beyond those encountered in most foreign languages. Though today it is increasingly being popularised, it remains essentially an elitist, 'learned' language. It has been used without substantial change for over thirteen centuries, in regions as distant as Spain and China, in fields as diverse as poetry and medicine, mathematics and theology. Its morphology and syntax are largely constant, but vocabulary, sense, idiom and style often vary widely. Arabic script requires a good deal of intelligent guesswork: long vowels and diphthongs are easily confused with certain consonants or with each other; short vowels are not normally indicated at all; most consonants are distinguished only by the placing of dots, and can easily be mistaken or misprinted. This is a textbook designed to guide the first-year student through the difficult early stages of learning Arabic. It avoids the dry, 'scholarly' approach; it uses modern linguistic concepts sparingly, and takes simple short-cuts where they serve an immediate, practical purpose. Modern Written Arabic: A Comprehensive Grammar (Comprehensive Grammars) ReviewThis volume is perhaps the most important contemporary Arabic descriptive grammar in English. It is based on texts from the 1990s with a preference for texts other than high literature. In its 800 pages, it covers most of modern Arabic grammar and syntax.
As a reference grammar, it will not be necessary (perhaps not even useful) to the student until he is at least at intermediate level. The grammatical terminology is highly technical - there is a useful glossary of terms in the back - and has rather idiosyncratic variations from terms that have become standard over the last century and a half (e.g. the 'accusative' case becomes the 'dependant' case). This is annoying: more seriously in my opinion, no attempt at all is made to provide native Arabic terms. Grammar is illustrated by a wealth of examples, presented in unpointed Arabic script, in a formal transliteration (i.e. with i'rab transliterated) and in translation (sometimes two where the idiom differs vastly between English and Arabic). This is excellent, and mitigates my strongest criticism of the book - it is littered with typos, especially in the Arabic script. Fortunately with the transliteration, one has a check. It is disappointing that Routledge who, after all, are charging a vast sum equivalent to a Harissowitz or Brill book for the hard-back edition haven't tried to emulate the editorial standards of the serious academic presses.
However, despite complaints, this is a work that will amply repay study. I would still recommend the student to use a good teaching grammar - I like Haywood and Nahmad - before and as a guide to 'recommended' usage, especially as Haywood and Nahmad has reference to Arabic terminology (Wright could serve as a terminological reference for the more advanced Classical Arabic student, and indeed goes far beyond H&N in covering terminology). Finally, thanks to Routledge for bringing this book out at a price that a student can (just about) afford.
Karin Ryding's A Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic, which I thought might be comparable, is a fairly normal reference grammar of MSA. A Student Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic ReviewI've been using this book as a quick grammar reference for university level Arabic classes for several years now (picked it up soon after it came out) and don't have much to complain about. Schulz's book is concise, compact, thorough, and relatively inexpensive. The layout isn't completely intuitive and may be confusing if you aren't used to Arabic grammar references. The index is laid out nicely and is easily accessible. I have no problem using this book in class to quickly find and clarify an aspect of grammar without falling behind the rest of the students. Its the perfect complement to Arabic instructional materials like the Al-Kitaab series, which do a good job of introducing grammatical rules and structures but aren't easy to reference and lack concise explanations.
A few things are worth mentioning however...
* You need to be able to read Arabic script to effectively use the book as the examples are not transliterated.
* You should have at least a basic knowledge of Arabic before using this book, or you won't get much out of it. Its probably best if you have studied Arabic for at least a year, as you will not need this book much for the first year of study. For intermediate level students and higher this book is great for review, but if you have not been introduced to a concept previously it is difficult to learn it through this book. Combining this reference with Al-Kitaab and a competent instructor works well, and as you become more proficient in the language this book becomes increasingly useful.
* Again, to clarify; this book is not supposed to teach you Arabic grammar, it is a reference tool. To quote the preface, "Not all the rules are explained in detail since the room assumes that the user already knows Arabic and should be able to deduce the rule in question from the examples quoted." This doesn't mean the book is useless for non-advanced students, just that you need to supplement it with instructional materials (and an instructor!). I personally found the book disappointing until my knowledge of Arabic grammar grew and I could make sense of the examples and terminology.
* Depending on your knowledge of Arabic and linguistics (and Arabic linguistics in particular) you may need to study the basic lexicon before being able to effectively use this book. The grammatical concepts and terms are referred to and indexed in both English and Arabic. If you are still working on basic grammar you probably are only comfortable in one or the other, so you should use either the English or Arabic terms and not both to avoid confusion. I've found that this book is helping me to understand Arabic grammar in both languages as I try to learn the English terminology when reviewing topics, and I can now compare the grammars of both English and Arabic easier.
For example, I now know that al-marfoo3, al-manSub, al-majzum and al-amr are moods, and that Arabic contains two voices. Before I didn't associate imperative with anything else and only thought of the aforementioned concepts in relation to their case ending rather than their grammatical function. If you had asked me what accusative or jussive meant before I got this book I wouldn't have had a clue.The reviewer Colin is right that this book isn't for the beginning student, but it isn't just for advanced students either. I think he was looking for an instructional text, which may explain much of his review. Still, in response to some of his points... Masdar is a very basic concept and isn't too difficult compared to many of the other grammatical structures so it doesn't need many pages for elaboration. The verb charts are organized correctly, on page 12 Schulz clarifies with, "The order of persons in the Arabic conjugational paradigm is 3rd person - 2nd person - 1st person. This complies with Arab tradition and the practice pursued in nearly all Arabic textbooks." The dual forms are necessary to learn for literary Arabic, though for beginning students they can be ignored. The "'added' extra marks" are diacritics denoting the short vowels and are absolutely essential for literary (esp. classical) Arabic as they mark case and help identify the form used. If you have not used vocalized script before you certainly haven't progressed far enough to need this book!
The reviewer Just Another Linguist also has some misconceptions about the text. The book is organized into three parts: verbs, nouns, and syntax. Within each section the concepts are organized into further sub-divisions. It all flows nicely and the organization works well for a reference grammar, though if you wanted to learn Arabic grammar the organization is not suited to working through the whole book which may be the reason for such comments. I haven't noticed anything in the way of typographical errors, and certainly nothing to diminish the quality the text. The complaint about price feels odd to me as this is probably the cheapest Arabic-study related book I own and it is well worth the price!I wasn't going to write a review for this book until I saw the existing ones, which I don't feel appropriately represent the text. 'A Student Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic' is a great reference guide that is best used in conjunction with other instructional materials or by those with decent existing knowledge of Arabic grammar. Its compact and easily transportable, well-organized and indexed, has examples for everything, isn't very expensive, and will be useful for as long as you continue to use/study Arabic.A Student Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic OverviewThis accessible grammar provides a concise and user-friendly guide to the structure of Modern Standard Arabic. Using familiar terminology and keeping theory to a minimum, it is suitable for beginning students as well as those at a more advanced level. Detailed descriptions of all types of sentences are given, and numerous tables provide a clear presentation of verbs and nouns.The most familiar grammatical terms are given in Arabic as well as in English in order to help students identify them more easily.

A Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic (Reference Grammars) ReviewThis is an excellent reference manual for MSA Arabic. I found it a useful reference for somebody who already has a firm grasp of Arabic and would like to gain a deeper understanding of the language. If you are a beginner, or even intermediate student, this really isn't the right text for you. It is simply too difficult to make sense of without adequate background. I majored in Middle East Studies/Arabic and also lived in the Mid East for a while--and found it just right for me. I selected this book a while after graduating to solidify and deepen my understanding of the extreme complexities of the language. I was not the top student in written Arabic (nor was I the bottom student), so perhaps a more exceptional student academically could make use of it with less experience. Personally, I did much better in spoken Arabic, but less so in written Arabic--so I needed (need) a book like this.
The book does build from chapter to chapter, so skipping right to chapter 11, for instance, may be difficult for the average person. If you skip chapters, it assumes that you understand the previous chapters. The amount of material covered in this book is both its strength and it's weakness: if you are ready for over 700 pgs of complicated Arabic grammar (not a page is wasted), go for it. Again, I don't recommend this for any but the VERY serious intermediate student (any student of Arabic has to be serious--I mean serious even for an Arabic student), or advanced skilled Arabic user.
I think it is best to look elsewhere if you are having trouble with a particular concept at a functional level. However, if you already understand the concept at a fairly functional level, and want to deepen your understanding, this book may be right for you. For example, verbs. If you in general know how to work an Arabic verb but want to know just how hollow verbs or assimilated verbs (/etc.) works beyond a basic recognition/survival ability, than this is a good choice. If you stumble with simple verbs then this is less useful--it will only confuse you with the level of detail.
However, everybody is different--I tend to be much less grammar oriented, and much more "speak to me and I'll speak back--if you look blank I'll try again" type of guy, not the academic guy. I got this book to balance that, and got more than my money's worth. This book is exactly what it says it is, and if that's what you want, get it.A Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic (Reference Grammars) OverviewKeeping technical terminology to a minimum, this comprehensive handbook provides a detailed yet accessible overview of Arabic wherein its phonology, morphology and syntax can be readily accessed. 501 Arabic Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All Forms ReviewUsed together with Hans Wehr's indispensable dictionary, this book is very useful for the intermediate learner of Arabic. However, the lack of English indexing is extremely frustrating. In short, it's definitely worth having until the next edition comes out - hopefully with a much-improved index.
PROS:
1. Each of the 501 verbs is conjugated neatly in its 65 different forms according to:
- person (1st, 2nd, and 3rd)
- number (singular, dual, plural)
- gender (feminine and masculine)
- voice (active and passive)
- mood (perfect (maadhi), imperfect (marfoo'a), subjunctive (mansoob), jussive (majroor), imperative (amr))
- active participle (sighat al-fa'il), passive participle (sighat al-maf'ool), and verbal noun (masdar)
These are all the forms that Arabic professors expect you (as an intermediate or advanced student) to know off the top of your head, but that few of us can actually recite perfectly - especially for weak verbs, hollow verbs, etc. So it's great having it all in once place as a reference. Even for the beginner, seeing all of this laid out for each verb in one place will give you a good visual schema for how Arabic verbs work.
2. Each verb comes with three or four example sentences using different forms of the verb in context. Very helpful if you're trying to learn new verbs.
3. Each verb comes with its verb pattern (wazn, I to X) and root (jadhr). The book is alphabetized by jadhr, just like Hans Wehr. The verbs are also indexed at the back of the book alphabetically in Arabic as well (i.e. by spelling of the pattern of the verb listed, not just by root).
4. Unlike some other reviewers, I don't find the type to be too small. It's fine. A lot of Arabic texts are written in smaller print than this anyway.
CONS:
1. Although each verb comes with the English meaning, there is no way to look up a verb by its English meaning without flipping through the entire book. This quickly becomes really annoying. It would have taken the publisher a couple of hours and added only a few pages to the end of the book to include an index of the 501 verbs by English definition. This is by far the biggest problem with the book. Without this problem, this would be a five-star book. The way it is, it's about 3 1/2 stars.
2. Although the verbs are indexed at the back of the book and numbered 1-501, page numbers aren't listed to lead you to the verb. Even worse, although the index tells you what verb #70 (out of 501) is, there's no #70 written next to the verb in the body of the book! So the index numbering is completely useless. A big oversight.
3. To make this book even better, it would help to have (a) the plural of the verbal noun (masdar) listed (since these are often irregular) and (b) the prepositions that are used with each verb. I find that I have to look to the example sentences to sort out which preposition comes after each verb, and sometimes that doesn't even clear up the question.
4. There are a few typos to watch out for - I've noticed a couple of sukkuns that should actually be hamzas. But this is a very minor gripe - it's almost 100% correct as far as I can tell.501 Arabic Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All Forms OverviewBarron's 501 Arabic Verbs is printed in Arabic script with exemplary sentences in English for each verb. To reflect correct Arabic style, 501 Arabic Verbs has been printed back cover to front and back page to front. Verbs are arranged alphabetically in a table format, one verb per page with English translation, and conjugated in all tenses and forms. The book's additional features include common idioms with example sentences to demonstrate verb usage and a grammar review.
