The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization ReviewAn excellent story teller, Lyons uses the curiosity, conversations and travels of Adelard of Bath to provide a historic context for Arabic influence on European thought. Traveling to the east from his home in England's West Country, Adelard hoped to increase his knowledge by learning the teachings of the Arabs. As the story of the wandering Adelard unfolds, the reader gleans some knowledge of the dominant beliefs of the middle ages, the philosophical debates of the day, of Church ideology in shaping views of the Muslim world, the crusaders, and the incorporation of Arab innovations by some of the Christian conquerors. Adelard returns home after seven years of travel with knowledge gained about Euclidean geometry, alchemy, and astrology. His publication of "On the Use of the Astrolabe" provides the west with an aid to timekeeping, navigation and measurement of the physical world as well as an introduction to astronomy.
One of the great centers of knowledge dissemination was the House of Wisdom. Located in Baghdad, it housed a library and translation/research center, and brought together from afar scholars as well as a very large collection of Persian, Sanskrit, and Greek texts of science and philosophy which became the bases of further advances in arithmetic, astronomy, medicine. For example, the Hindu "9 number system plus zero", which we use today, was explicated by Al-Khwarizmi, who later wrote "The Book of Restoring and Balancing", a study in algebra.
In like manner, Cordoba in Muslim Spain became an important center for the dissemination of knowledge. Bordering directly on Christian Europe, ideas, poetry, fashions, and foodstuffs flowed from east to west. In al-Andalus, the innovations included sophisticated agronomy and engineering to ensure successful crops of fruits and foods previously unknown in a region and climate quite different from India and Persia. Eventually translators from European countries followed Adelard in pursuing Arab knowledge, returning with their translations and original works to build or enhance universities in Bologna, Paris and Oxford.
This book is very accessible. It is written in so lively a prose the readers will hear Pope Urban II urging his crusaders to overcome the infidel Muslims and later will envision the scholars working together in translating ancient texts!
The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization OverviewFor centuries following the fall of Rome, Western Europe was a benighted backwater, a world of subsistence farming, minimal literacy, and violent conflict. Meanwhile Arab culture was thriving, dazzling those Europeans fortunate enough to visit cities like Baghdad or Antioch. There, philosophers, mathematicians, and astronomers were steadily advancing the frontiers of knowledge, as well as keeping alive the works of Plato and Aristotle. When the best libraries in Europe held several dozen books, Baghdad's great library, The House of Wisdom, housed four hundred thousand. Jonathan Lyons shows just how much "Western" ideas owe to the Golden Age of Arab civilization.

A Grammar of the Arabic Language ReviewThis book was wriiten by Caspari and only translated into english by Wright. It is by far the best book on this subject in the english language. Nothing like it has been produced as the days of orientalist scholarship that was able to appreciate and understand classical grammarians as those upon whose work Caspari based this on have gone. Modern arrogance has left this book on the shelves getting dusty when it should be the basis of all arabic study. The book is at times difficult to read as the english has not been edited since 1923 however this is good as it keeps out unwanted comment.
All in all if you buy this book (despite its price) I assure you, you will never grow out of it- and if you do you most certainly won't consider that money other than well spent- Good Luck!A Grammar of the Arabic Language OverviewThis is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have elected to bring the book back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide. This text refers to the Bibliobazaar edition.

Just Listen 'n' Learn Arabic, 2E Package (Book + 3CDs): The Fastest Way to Real Arabic (Just Listen and Learn Series) ReviewThis course teaches primarily the spoken Arabic of Amman; little attention is given to the written language, though the alphabet and the reading of some signs and menu items is taught. The series title, "Just Listen and Learn," is not appropriate; you must study the book carefully and have it open in front of you as you work with the recordings. Nor can you use the book well independently of the recordings; they are necessary for many of the exercises. The ability to back up your CD player over short passages of ten or twenty seconds is also necessary. Catching correct pronunciation from full-speed, natural conversations with background noise is not easy. There is far too much unhelpful English chitchat on the recordings. Strong points are the conversational approach, a good selection of vocabulary, and clear explanations of the literal meaning of Arabic phrases as well as their colloquial English equivalent. Grammar is clearly explained without becoming tedious. Numerous exercises prod you to start speaking. The best reason to select this course is why I bought it: I was going to Amman.Just Listen 'n' Learn Arabic, 2E Package (Book + 3CDs): The Fastest Way to Real Arabic (Just Listen and Learn Series) Overview

Sibawayhi (Makers of Islamic Civilization) ReviewThe Author has done a good job of bringing to light the life of one of the earliest grammarians of Arabic Language. Overall, the book is a good read, although a reader who does not have some background in Arabic Grammar will feel lost after the first few terms. This book is also a very good primer for anyone who wants to delve into the intricacies of Sibawayhi's Al-Kitab since the author has very diligently described various chapters/parts of Al-Kitab and how the work helped in the growth of a nascent Arabic grammar.
All in all, a work well done.Sibawayhi (Makers of Islamic Civilization) OverviewThe eighth century scholar Sibawayhi was the first grammarian of Arabic. Carter discusses his origins and background, his relationship with his teachers, the intellectual context of his grammatical ideas, and how his general concept of language shaped his approach to Arabic. Sibawayhi's monumental work--known simply as "the Book"--embodies a universality that is still being uncovered. So thorough is the work that it remains to this day the great authority on classical Arabic. This biography provides a superb introduction to the subject of Arabic linguistics and to the life and times of its founder.

Poems of Arab Andalusia ReviewI love poetry and I love the history of al-Andalus, so I raced through this book. The poetry is both beautiful and moving. Franzen's introduction states that this is a translation from a translation (Arabic to Spanish to English) so purists who speak either Arabic or Spanish may want to track down these poems in either the original or the first-remove. I do not speak either Arabic or Spanish and so cannot testify to Franzen's fidelity to the Arabic verse. I preferred Franzen to A.J. Arberry's more direct translation, however. Franzen's translations definitely work as emotionally powerful poetry.Poems of Arab Andalusia OverviewThese poems, from the astonishing 10th- through 13th-century civilization in Andalusia, are based on the codex of Ibn Sa'id, who wanted poems "whose idea is more subtle than the West Wind, and whose language is more beautiful than a fair face." Spanish readers have long been enchanted by their enduring appeal through the versions by Emilio García Gómez. This poetry of Arab Andalusia made a profound impact on Spain's Generation of '27. Rafael Alberti says that it "was a revelation for me and had a great influence on my work, but above all influenced the work of Federico García Lorca.

Seen and Heard: A Century of Arab Women in Literature and Culture ReviewThis is a timely and much needed work to better understand the role and status of women in contemporary arab society. It gives great insight into contemporary culture and the writings of leading arab authors. A must!!Seen and Heard: A Century of Arab Women in Literature and Culture OverviewHow are Arab women seen by others? How do Arab women see themselves? New York University professor Mona Mikhail's new collection of essays casts a wide net over literature, film, popular culture, and the law in order to investigate the living, often rapidly changing, reality of Arab women and their societies. Whether she examines Egyptian film, contemporary rewritings of the Sherazad story, or women in North African novels, Mikhail sheds valuable light on the role of Arab women within Islam and within the Arab world.

Your First 100 Words Arabic w/Audio CD (Your First 100 Words In...Series) ReviewI am using this on my own in preparation for college level Arabic classes and so far it's been pretty helpful re: pronunciation but the narrator's voice on the CD grates upon my nerves and the English instructions are too drawn out (thus less time for Arabic). The book itself is good because it has large type and flashcards you can cut out. My main quibble with the book: ugly graphics. Overall it is very helpful but it's not enjoyable to listen to ... unlike Pimsleur.

Ace My Language - Arabic Edition ReviewPlease note, this is not a textbook. You don't get grammar or vocab. It's an exercise book to practice listening and reading skills for media Arabic, aimed at improving test scores on the DLPT and similar examinations.
This book is a collection of just over 400 Arabic news items each of around 100 words. The author notes, "Using proprietary statistical methods, I have ensured that you will encounter extensive essential vocabulary, every type of sentences structure, and varying degrees of textual complexity that you will see and hear in real-world contexts and on many standardized tests."
The first section contains the texts in a very clear Arabic font, followed by a single multiple choice question. The second section simply contains the questions and the third contains the answers to the questions. Included is a CD with all of the texts read by Ghneim, the files being provided in WAV and MP3 format.
The value in this book is the excellent choice of texts, the clear, very readable Arabic font and Ghneim's excellent, clear and well-paced readings of the texts. There is no glossary provided, and I think that is appropriate, since in my experience with these texts I can get the subject and broad picture and then go to Hans Wehr for clarification of unknown vocab.
One issue I noted was that, in transferring the audio files to iTunes and then to my iPod, every file had the EXACT same name. When transferred to my desktop, and having changed some of the names, the original (unhelpful) title reverted as soon as I dragged it into iTunes. As you can imagine, this resulted in the VERY TEDIOUS process of moving all 406 MP3s across to iTunes, then clicking on and relabeling them in a numerical sequence.
Well, that was a pain. But having transferred and renamed each track I now have a massive resource for listening study.
The questions, for me, are less useful. But that is because I have reached a level of self-study. But I am sure they would form a useful basis for classroom discussion of the texts.
I absolutely recommend this for upper-intermediate self-study and advanced revision and think it would be terrifically useful for teachers of Arabic.
I've given it five stars, which may seem high (my previous review also scored five) but I think that reflects the quality and effort that has gone into what is a very useful study tool in an area of language study that has over the years been a bit shambolic and random. Clearly I am not assessing it on grammar instruction or glossary - since neither of these areas are covered - but on the basis of what the book is designed to do and how ell it achieves its objective.
Ace My Language - Arabic Edition OverviewWith over 400 reading and more than 8 recorded hours of listening exercises, Ace My Language Arabic is ideal for those with a foundation in Arabic who want to dramatically improve their acquisition and retention, as well as their performance on standardized tests, including the DLPT. The exercises, from current authentic sources, are statistically engineered to achieve amazing results by maximizing exposure to the language most frequently encountered in real-world contexts. This book was formerly called Ace the DLPT.

Arabic-English Dictionary: The Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic (English and Arabic Edition) ReviewThis dictionary is monumental in several ways. first, it is invaluable in that it seeks to provide the learner with the means to easily see how more complex words are built from the basic consonantal roots. second, the number and quality of the entries is excellent such that, regardless of what level the Arabic student is at, it won't disappoint. It certainly will be the only one you will ever need unless/until you are doing very specialized work. Thirdly, the fact that it is Arabic to English only is not disadvantageous if the learner approaches the language by learning to read basic stories and other writings once they have completed a basic, intermediate and advanced course and so have a strong foundation for thinking in the language, this dictionary will motivate one to continue learning Arabic through Arabic, where they need translation only to confirm their understanding of the meaning of specific words/phrases.
Moreover, it is one of those dictionaries that motivates you to read it, and it is easy to glean information from it so as to naturally build your vocabulary over time. it is designed by scholars to encourage the student who earnestly wants to learn the language rather than scaring them away.
And so, it is a must-have learning tool and resource (NOT JUST A REFERENCE!!!) for any serious student of Arabic, regardless of their level of specialty. it is essential for building THAT SOLID VOCABULARY one would need into college and graduate level studies.
The only negative thing (AND THIS BY NO MEANS TAKES AWAY ITS 'INVALUABLE/5STAR STATUS) about this 1130 page edition is that the font is no doubt on the small side, but that's what magnifying glasses are for. After living in Asia for a number of years, books are smaller and so one gets used to carrying around a pocket magnifier with them anyway.
Best wishes in your studies. this book will not only give you an intense jumpstart, but will help you stay motivated when you're 'down in the valleys'. Enjoy!!!Arabic-English Dictionary: The Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic (English and Arabic Edition) Overview
