Arabic Travel Pack Review
If your goal is to spend the month or two before your trip learning some basic Arabic phrases, this set will not help you. The CD is particularly useless, though the ability to hear the language is probably why most people would find this set an attractive concept.
First, there is no attempt to use the CD teach you basic patterns that can be used at the "survival" level. Instead there is a random selection of grammatically complex phrases that most people are unlikely to use in any case. "Is there a senior's discount?" is an example. First thing you are likely to want to ask when you get off the plane.
Second, based on my experience with other Berlitz products, I suspect they are just taking content that they have owned for decades and just repackaging it. How else to explain the phrase "I confirmed my reservation by mail." (not E-mail, either).
Third, the CD contains an ongoing commentary in English (including half way through "by now, you should be comfortable with a variety of day to day phrases in Arabic") which are worthless to start with and a harmful distraction on subsequent listenings. Meanwhile, I waited in vain for the phrase "where is the bathroom?" to appear on the CD. Maybe I missed it, but the phrase "We are having a party and hope you can come." is there.
Fourth, though supposedly the experts in foreign language learning and usage, I can't help but thinking that the people who put this set together have never really travelled abroad or had to use a foreign language in difficult situations. Why else would they think that the phrase "does anyone here speak English?" needs to be remembered in Arabic?
