Sahlawayhi 1: Graded Stories for Beginners (Arabic Edition) ReviewIf you want to learn to pass written tests, get a grammar book. But if you want to actually acquire a language, that is, understand it easily at full speed, read it fluently and have it flow out of your mouth without any conscious thought, then you need something different. You need comprehensive input that is:1) Interesting enough to keep you focused on the content, not the act of decifering.
2) At a level you understand, plus just a little more, to keep you progressing.
3) Massive! That means you need a whole lot of it - far, far more than the little paragraphs offered in grammar books.
This input could be spoken, or TV, or video games. But if you like reading, then finding books or magazines at the right level is crucial to your progress. And until now, there has been NOTHING in Arabic to fill this gap. Everything at a beginner level is written for five-year-olds or Koranic scholars. While anything that would keep an adult's attention is far too difficult. I've looked to no avail for the Arabic equivalent of Lo/Hi reading, i.e.easy reading, high interest books for 10 to 12 year olds, like our Babysitters Club or Goosebumps type of series. Nothing. Finally a few readers are trickling into the market, but this is the first one that really has the vocabulary recycling, and the long texts that acquirers really need. Plus, they do a marvelous job of creating plausible stories of interest to adults out of limited vocabulary. In place of all the stultifying paragraphs about where the train station is located or how much you like your nice teacher.
As for the first reviewer's comment, the convenience of looking up words is irrelevant because in most cases the context tells you and you're scarcely aware the word is new. And those few you do have to look up you'll only do once, because you'll get really familiar with it from the text.
Thanks for finally providing something sorely needed for adult arabic learners! Now I'm on to level two.Sahlawayhi 1: Graded Stories for Beginners (Arabic Edition) OverviewThis is the first-ever series of graded stories for beginning adult learners of Arabic as a foreign language. It is based on the following principles:1. gradual introduction of vocabulary and structure, in context.2. frequent recycling of both.3. a huge volume of comprehensible input. The twelve stories in this reader are divided into three levels of four stories each. The stories range from 200 - 314 words.
