The only previous reference grammar in English, by Lewis Glinert, while an excellent work, is expensive, very technical, very heavy on syntax, and often outdated. This new volume is easy to use, and includes tons of useful and helpful information. It is not a comprehensive grammar with every last detail, but will still be of great value to the student of Hebrew, from the beginner to the advanced level. Biblia Hebraica Leningradensia: Prepared according to the Vocalization, Accents, and Masora of Aaron ben Moses ben Asher in the Leningrad Codex ReviewThis text is the one I have on my desk for reading and reference. I like the style of the print, it is clear and easy to read. It should be said here that the author's intent is to provide a text "...suitable for Jewish ritual use as well" as providing an accurate Bible. This "intent" colors the text somewhat as He was willing to be "occasionally obliged to deviate from it, ( the Leningrad Codex ), for the sake of customs and conventions that have become rooted since the time the manuscript was written." This should not worry the reader, however. It is appearent that Aron Dotan has given us the best usable Bible in the Ben Asher tradition we have to date, and has challenged those of the BHQ committee to surpass his edition, (p.X). He is also willing to say that there are limitations to his text and as his forward indicates, he has given us his best effort. Compendious Syriac Grammar ReviewWell, this grammar is a reference grammar. This is the most comprehensive Syriac grammar in English. It isn't a read-thu book, it isn't a teaching book. This is the book you use when Wheeler Thackstone or Coakley/Robinson - or even Muraoka - fails to give you the info you need. Certainly, there's quite a bit that could be modernised, the syntax for one, but for all the Latinate terminology, it is simply the best reference in English. It is the nearest Syriac has to Gesenius for Hebrew or Wright for Arabic. Please don't buy it expecting it to be what it's not.Compendious Syriac Grammar Overview

An Introduction to Aramaic (Resources for Biblical Study) ReviewGreenspahn's new grammar is a welcome and long overdue addition to the field. Until now, the standard work for students trying to get a grasp on the Aramaic of the Bible has been Franz Rosenthal's grammar of Biblical Aramaic. In point of fact, to call Rosenthal's work a "grammar" is a bit generous. Neither a learning grammar, nor really a comprehensive technical grammar, it reads more like a string of notes taken by one of the 20th century's great semitists--which is what it is. A student trying to teach himself Aramaic without a teacher would be lost. That is the great strength of Greenspahn's work.
"An Introduction to Aramaic" is a wonderfully, refreshingly student-oriented approach to the language. It is a beginner's grammar--although it does make the explicit claim that one does need a knowledge of Biblical Hebrew before using this work to dive into the Bible's Aramaic (ironically enough, precisely the opposite claim is made in Rosenthal's grammar!). Not only are the Aramaic portions of Ezra and Daniel covered, but the transliterated Aramaic of the New Testament, and the other snippets of Aramaic from the Hebrew Bible are as well. In addition, the grammar introduces students to extra-biblical Aramaic, including that of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Targumim.
For most of the world, Aramaic classes are hard to come by. If you've had biblical Hebrew and want access to the rest of the Bible's text, this is the grammar for you. Students would most benefit from using a more technical grammar, such as Rosenthal's, in conjunction with Greenspahn's.An Introduction to Aramaic (Resources for Biblical Study) OverviewThis work is an introduction to biblical Aramaic for beginning students who are already familiar with Hebrew. All Aramaic passages in the Old Testament are included, along with an introduction to other Aramaic texts, such as ancient transcriptions, Dead Sea Scrolls, and rabbinic literature.
