An Explanation of Muhammad Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab's Kitab Al-Tawhid (English and Arabic Edition) Review"An Explanation of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's KITAB AL-TAWHID" by "Allamah Abd al-Rahman al-Sadi, as translated into English by "Abu Khaliyl" in 288 high-quality, glossy-stock pages, as published by Al-Hidaayah" in 2003. [Tawhid: "Singling out Allah with all rights due to Him alone."]{Kitab al-Tawhid: "Book of Unity"} (Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab: b.1703-d.1792 AD) Arabic language is quoted, alongside its English transliteration, with the analysis being in English. Besides the opinions expressed by al-Wahhab regarding hadith, Allamah al-Sadi provides his notes and commentary (al Qawl al-Sadid) on the 67 chapter-topics discussed in this book. Al-Sadi provides usually about two pages of commentary analysis for each chapter. Al-Sadi provides references to other Muslim writers and theologians, as well. On any given chapter, al-Sadi will list perhaps 10 "Important Points" regarding al-Wahhab's analysis, followed by al-Sadi's "Commentary" analyzing al-Wahhab's thoughts.Following are highlights of some topics: Man and Jinn exist to worship only Allah; Tawhid removes sins; Discusses the errors of shirk; Shirk includes the wearing of bracelets ruqya, charms and cords in seeking protection (other than relying on Allah); Seeking the blessings of trees, stones and other things is shirk (except is okay to kiss the Black Stone embedded in the Kaaba; Slaying animals only for the honor of Allah; All intercession is Allah's; Chastises Christians and Jews for developing their religions in `leaving their [true Muslim] religion" (p.111); Wahhab opposed the development of shrines [masjids] for pious Muslims (p. 117); Wahhab opposed the concept that pious Muslims could `intercede' to Allah on behalf of some praying Muslim; Magic, fortunetellers, omens, rain-making by anwa, and spells are opposed; The situation when Mohammad allowed a Jew to be killed because he sought judicial resolution from someone other than the Prophet (p. 194); al-Wahhab thought that the Jews and Christians were guilty of a minor shirk as they refused to recognize Mohammad as the final Prophet (p. 211-212); Cursing offends Allah; Cannot `joke' anything that Mohammad revealed; Do not call your slave `slave', but `my boy' or `my young woman' (p.237-238); Those who make pictures destined for `Fire'; Excessive swearing is bad; Claimed that the hadith-recorder Muslim quoted the Prophet as saying: "Fight in the name of Allah, killing whoever disbelieves in Allah" (p. 262); and other warnings about sinful things that will result in `Hell Fire.' Concerning tawakkul or pre-destiny, al-Sadi commented: "that whatever Allah wills will certainly be, and what He does not will cannot be" (p. 175), and "it is necessary for the worshipper to fear Allah" (p. 177). All of al-Wahhab's writings here essentially regard `religious' issues: such as how a person should relate to Allah; there appear to be no specific `political' writings as to HOW al-Wahhab's thoughts should be implemented - outside that offenders are going to receive `Hell Fire'. One deficiency in al-Wahhab's writings is that all too frequently he will cite a quotation as "Recorded by al-Bukhari" but then not provide a specific volume, page or paragraph citation -- which leads a reader wondering whether or not the cited quotation actually exists. Not for the casual reader seeking an in-depth analysis of al-Wahhab's political or military actions.
