RAAJNEETI - A Prakash Jha Film - Subtitle (English/Arabic) (2010) ReviewPrakash Jha has directed many movies and most of them were about the political and family strife that exists in Uttar and Madhya Pradesh except if my memory serves me right the exception was Hip Hip Hurruay. Rajneeti is in the same vein and it explores the political aspirations and shenanigans of career politicians in the North. It is also inspired from the Hindu epic Mahabharata and to a certain extent the Gandhi family. To attempt a film like Rajneeeti is not easy because not only does one have to manage such a huge star cast but also the logistics of shooting in crowded areas for political rallies. The only other director that has successfully done that would be J. P. Dutta. Besides the massive cast, the length of the movie was a concern it clocks at almost 3 hours. If one wants the audience to sit through a long movie, the movie must be very well edited and riveting from the go. So does Rajneeti have it in it to suceeed?Rajneeti is about the games people in power play. Bahskar Sanyal (Nasseruddin Shah) is a leftist leader who is riding high in popularity and has begun to pose a serious challenge to the elite in power. However he makes a mistake which hides a secret which is revealed much later in the movie and starts a self imposed exile. The story then shifts to the present day and warring rivalries between two cousins, Arjun Rampal ( Prithvi ) and Veerendra ( Manoj Bajpayee) who are desperate for power and will stop at nothing. Veerendra chooses Sooraj ( Ajay Devgan ) to become the head of the minority and backward classes and contest an election when his own family has put him in to the corner. Prithvis brother ( Ranbir Kapoor) is an outsider who knows nothing about politics and is a doctoral student of English in America, he has come to India for a visit but gets sucked in to this treacherous world. Katrina Kaif ( Indu )is in love with Ranbir but also gets caught in this web. Nana Patekar ( Brij Gopal ) is a mentor to these youngsters and is forced to take sides in this bloody battle.
Anjum Rajabali and Prakash Jha's script keeps you glued to the screen for these ling hours and it is not easy in these times when even a length of one hour is considered long. This is where they succeed, but there are flaws in this script that I have to point out and those are the disappearance of Naseeruddin Shah after the first three minutes. Ranbir Kapoor's transformation as a doctoral candidate in Victorion poetry to a ruthless pollster and kingmaker does not appear to be convincing. But barring these flaws the movie works because Jha has successfully managed to make a watchable movie featuring a ensemble of characters. Nana Patekar manages a great performance and manages to convey emotions without speaking too many lines. Ranbir Kapoor is getting better and hogs the camera a testimony to his rising star value. Manoj Bajpayee is great and perfectly suited to the Bihari politician role and his dialect is perfect. The biggest surprise is Arjun Rampal who delivers a top notch performance and is a revelation in every scene. The supporting cast is serves well. I had the privilege of watching it at an advance premiere and loved it....Four stars. 6/2/10
