Salah Al Hamdani's accounts of his exile from his homeland and his heart-wrenching return visit to Baghdad took me through physical and spiritual landscapes that are at once foreign and yet utterly recognizable . What changes when we leave a place? What is never lost completely? Hamdani illumines his answers with a gift for conveying large emotions through small, telling visual details. Sonia Alland's translation is masterful: so fluent, crisp, and transparent that it seems to be the author's deepest language.
