Dr Carter introduces this book with the intention that it present the fully-developed medieval Arabic grammatical tradition to contemporary linguists.
The core of this book is the medieval secondary school level grammar text of Sidi al-Ajurrum, a skeleton to be memorized by students and expounded on by teachers. A typical sentence is "The particles of coordination are ten in number: and they are wa 'and'; fa 'and then';..."
This text, the Ajurrumiyya, is surrounded by the commentary of one Sidi ash-Shirbini, a grammarian who provides bachelor's level discussion of the grammar described in the core.
Ash-Shirbini's text, written in the 16th century, is provided in Arabic & English. On the facing page are notes forming a metacommentary by Carter, a contemporary linguist. The supercommentary is rife with internal cross-references and external references.
