intellectual movement toward Arabism and European modernity in Arabic

influence of the state and its failures and defeats, and concludes with
narratives that search for ways to understand Islam in contemporary

Culture Narratives," in which he seeks parallels between the European
literary form of the saga and narratives stemming from Arabic popular
