Al-Nawawi Forty Hadiths and Commentary ReviewThis is a brief collection of various hadiths, mainly from Al-Bukhari and Al-Muslim, in 40 (actually 42) categories. They cover subjects in Islam such as definitions, morality (the 5 pillars, heresy, etc), theological (doubt, certainty, righteousness, sin, etc), cosmological or uh... "scientific" (fetal development), etc.
For people new to academic studies of Islam, this is not recommended reading material. What you need is the massive, multi-volume collections of Al-Bukhari, Al-Muslim, and other hadithists and a few crates of highlighters (they're more than a lot to read through).
This collection is just an overview, a brief introduction for those wishing to learn a small generalization of what Islam is about (albeit, perhaps an incomplete over-generalization). Its an easy read and organized well. Unfortunately, it is not large enough, or detailed enough, for my use this semester... though I have books on Judaism that are just as brief and small.Al-Nawawi Forty Hadiths and Commentary OverviewOur objective has always been to produce an English-language comprehensive, but yet compact, book of hadith that is easy to read and understand by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The book covers all aspects of Islam from the very basic abstract definitions to the most practical daily chores. It contains all the major sharia laws. The book is a horse's mouth for hadith commentary and is the cream of the crop of all hadith books.We translated from Arabic Imam Al-Nawawi's book in its entirety including the lines of poetry. We listed the text of each hadith in Arabic first and followed it by the English translation of the hadith and commentary.If you want to study Islam thoroughly and don't have time to go through endless volumes of esoteric literature, this is the book to read. It's a compact standard book that is taught to all Muslim students around the world. It is a reference book that can be kept for many years to come. This English translation by the Arabic Virtual Translation Center is complete, accurate, unfiltered, and unbiased.
