Written Arabic: An Approach to the Basic Structures ReviewAs it is written in the introduction for this book, it is for people who, having a basic knowledge of the language wants to be able to read common texts. This means that if you are in a medium stage, and you, like me, are trying to read some children stories or the Kalila wa Dimna fables, and do not master all the grammar needed to do it, this book can be of great help, although it is more a complement for a real grammar study than a grammar itself, it just takes you in a kind of shortcut to some of the structures one will have to study chapters and chapters later in an ordinary grammar or textbook. Indeed it is a kind of abstract of all the sentence ending particles, connectors, negation particles, verb type forms, etc, that you will encounter in a text, so if you have not studied one of them or have forgotten it, this little compendium will help you to have at least an idea of which one is its structural function in an arabic sentence. Now, if you are on an advanced level, the book for you is The connectors in Modern Standard Arabic by Nariman Naili Al-Warraki, a non vocalized text that is constituted of sample texts (and a translationof them) that contain the examined connectors, the ones that are schematically explained; there is also an exercice at the end of each chapter, but no key to the answers. He excludes the mass of linguistic detail contained in traditional Arabic grammars which assume the student wishes to master all aspects of the language. On the other hand the book provides for a sound understanding of abstract literature on scholarly subjects, in contrast to manuals teaching a quick understanding of journalistic Arabic.
