An Arabic-English Vocabulary of the Colloquial Arabic of Egypt: Containing the Vernacular Idioms and Expressions, Slang Phrases, Etc., Etc., Used by the Native Egyptians ReviewThis vocabulary book of simple English to Arabic and Arabic to English is useful for many reason. It was written in the last half of the 19th century so it gives a perspective of language usage that is galvanized and not effected by current dialect and linguistic trends. The Romanization of the words from Arabic to English seems to be proper and phonetically correct, even by today's standards. It remains to be seen what modern Arabic speakers think of the dated language but for those interested in a window into past speaking styles, dialects and mannerisms it is quite a treasure.
As noted, some of the words are colloquial and may be extinct in current practice since trends come and go. And since this book is over 100 years old some of those social and dialectic words may have gone into the bin of antiquity. At the same time the static position of this book gives us a sense of what more authentic and localized Arabic language must have been before the influx of Westerners. An Arabic-English Vocabulary of the Colloquial Arabic of Egypt: Containing the Vernacular Idioms and Expressions, Slang Phrases, Etc., Etc., Used by the Native Egyptians OverviewThis is an EXACT reproduction of a book published before 1923. This IS NOT an OCR'd book with strange characters, introduced typographical errors, and jumbled words. This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process.
