Colloquial Arabic of Egypt (Colloquial Series) ReviewI have worked through the entire course and have found "Colloquial Arabic of Egypt" to be one of the best books on the spoken language of Egypt that's available for a self-learner.
Spoken Egyptian Arabic is just that ---- it's the language that people speak and it's rare that any books or newspapers are printed using the spoken language. To read books and newspapers a knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic is required, and that has different vocabulary and grammar than the spoken language. This book, because it concentrates on the colloquial language, emphasizes vocabulary needed for speech and doesn't aim to provide a reading vocabulary. The grammar of the spoken language is very much streamlined compared to that of the full formal written language, and this book gives an excellent presentation of the grammar needed for speaking. So the goal of the book is perhaps more restricted than that of other "Colloquial" books that provide the basis for both a speaking and reading knowledge of the language. It's quite well known that to gain a full command of Arabic you need both knowledge of a colloquial dialect and (separately) a knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic.
Another plus of this book is that it's one of the few books on the spoken language of Egypt that gives an introduction to the Arabic script, so you can get a start on learning to read. The authors give Arabic script versions of the dialogues. I came to this book already knowing the Arabic script and wanted a book that permitted me to continue working with the script. I found that this book really supplied what I needed in this regard.
I found some supplementary materials helpful to use along with this book. Wightwick and Gaafar have also authored the Michel Thomas course, "Speak Arabic for Beginners." The Arabic in this course is spoken Egyptian and the general presentation of grammar parallels that in "Colloquial Arabic of Egypt." I found it easy and rewarding to work through both courses in parallel.
Other materials I found of help are good phrase books. The dictionaries that I've come across deal with Modern Standard Arabic and not with spoken Eqyptian. Good phrase books have filled in the gap. Two that I've used to supplement "Colloquial Arabic" are Lonely Planet's "Egyptian Arabic Phrasebook" and Barron's "Arabic at a Glance, third edition." While "Colloquial Arabic" gives a good general working vocabulary, the phrasebooks give the more specialized vocabulary that a tourist needs.
Two things have occurred which indicate to me how instructive this book is. First, when I was half-way through with the book, I watched an Egyptian movie and was pleasantly surprised that I could understand the general sense of everything that was said. I felt pretty good about this, so the book was able to provide me with enough background to give me a strong sense of accomplishment. The other thing is that now that I've worked through the book in about four months, my friends who speak Arabic are amazed that an American has learned so much of the language so quickly by learning on his own. Again that speaks highly of the methodology of the book.
