Arabic for Reading and Speaking: with Audio CD ReviewI don't know why this book has such a crummy review. I loved this book. It is NOT a textbook, neither is it a guide. It is a workbook, kind of like the kinds you have in elementary school for Language Arts. There are many fill in the blank exercises and matching, too. I can already read a little Arabic, but I can tell that this book goes bit by bit with the alphabet. And hey, it comes with a CD--who can beat that? I had to learn by alif baa by writing it a million times and had to look online for pronunciation. This eliminates the hassle of doing that. And the exercises really reinforce your learning.
I think its fun enough for self tuition, but may also be helpful to use other books. I never suggest just one to learn anything. I like anything from Pimsleur CDs to Teach Yourself Beginner's Arabic Script. But if you are just starting and enjoy doing exercises, I think this is great. I LOVE workbook formats and have found very few Arabic books with this kind of format. Its just the way I like to learn. Furthermore, if you want something light to study from before taking an Arabic class for the first time, this seems good. It gives you lots of helpful information without being overwhelming. And I think this is important for anyone starting a new language. The book's exercises present words, phrases, and sentences in English, followed by phonetic spellings, which are followed in turn by Arabic script. Language students learn to identify parts of speech, verb forms, and other grammatical details as they familiarize themselves with most-often-used words and phrases in conversational Arabic. Practice exercises with answers are interspersed throughout each lesson. An enclosed audio compact disc presents dialogues that are especially focused to teach correct pronunciation and listening comprehension.
