Lunch With God ReviewLUNCH WITH GOD IS A SIMPLE AND PROFOUND BOOK. IT GUIDES THE READER TO THE INNERMOST OF THEIR STATE OF BEING, TO THE UNEXPECTED AND SURPRISING. THE AUTHOR PLAYS WITH TIME ALONG AN EXPANDED DURATION WHERE THE INDETERMINATION OF OUR SIMPLE HUMAN EXISTENCE IS CLEARLY SPOTTED. HE TRAVELS THROUGH THE SEASONS OF TIME, PHENOMENA, AND STORIES THAT MAKE THE READER REFLECT UPON HIS FUTURE POSSIBILITIES.
THE BOOK IS EASY TO READ, ENJOYABLE AND SIMULTANEOUSLY PROFOUND.Lunch With God OverviewStanding at the corner of a busy intersection in downtown Rio de Janeiro. A typical day for Atala, thoughts racing with the speed of his metropolitan environment. The heat is sweltering, air thick and the worries weighing him down. A moment any responsible human being is all to familiar with. Suddenly an awkward looking man joins him at his side. Once the signal turns our adventure begins...Lunch with God is a personal account that takes us through a transformation. It evokes the magic powers settled within each and every one of us, desperately wanting to be awakened and put to use. Time in this story is portrayed as an object of our dismay, and the only way to accept our magic powers is to understand time away from a mere measurement. Our magic powers depend on this new concept of time and everything in this universe. We are all connected, existing interdependently with one another. Atala emphasizes this order. Lunch with God is an invitation for all who dare to see our universe as a simple miracle.

The Complete Middle East Cookbook ReviewIn 1984 I was in college, living in an international married-student housing complex, where I quickly developed a large number of friends, including several who were from the Middle East and were in Oregon to study.            We used to gather in the courtyard between our ramshackle (but very cheap) apartments for casual potlucks to share our favorite dishes. The food was always varied and quite wonderful. However, the cooks wouldn't always part with their mothers' "secret" family recipes. So I went cookbook shopping.              The full-color photos of dishes in Mallos' book were worth the purchase price alone. Using the clearly written recipies, I prepared Lebanese, Arab, Greek and other dishes I had tasted at our informal dinners. Then I got brave and tried new ones. My friends and family RAVED. Several of my closest Middle Eastern friends even seemed a little jealous...they finally told me that I cooked their favorites better than did their mothers, and they went out and bought copies of the cookbook for themselves!        You will find how easy it is to make hummous, olive-oil-infused flatbreads, tabouleh, and a score of other now-trendy dishes you pay a fortune for at the deli.         The spanokopita is divine, with the golden, buttery phyllo leaves melting in your mouth to reveal the tang of feta melded with the spinach, onions, and toasted pine nuts.          Mallos' book also contains the recipe for the BEST baklava anyone has ever tasted (at least of those I've served it to). A million calories a bite, but well worth it!          If you are a creative cook who loves the pleasures of making good food for family and friends, this belongs in your kitchen -- or better yet, on your coffee table where you can pick it up and drool...         I recently bought a new edition for my brother. The binding is far nicer than the earlier release Ð my beloved and well-used copy is crumbling, but I can't bear to toss it . . . it falls open to our favorite recipes! The Complete Middle East Cookbook Overview

Breath of Words: The Arabic Calligraphy of Abd el Malik Nounouhi 2010 Wall Calendar ReviewThe frustrating search for a wall calendar with consistently high quality images led me to Amber Lotus Publishing for the second year in a row. I usually buy photography calendars, but I was so taken with the work of Abd el Malik Nounouhi when I saw it, that I decided that Arabic calligraphy was the way to go. Not an obvious leap, but Nounouhi's calligraphic art is stunning. He is a Moroccan artist who lives and exhibits in France. You can see many beautiful examples of his work on his web site, which I visited in an effort to find out if his calligraphy is religious-themed. It seems that none of his calligraphy is explicitly religious, but he favors universalist, philosophical quotations. Some are from religious figures of various faiths, while others are entirely secular.
Nounouhi uses quotations from all over the world and incorporates a variety of styles of art in his calligraphy. The quotations that have been rendered in Arabic calligraphy in this calendar are from: Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari (Sufi sheikh and writer), Spinoza, Saint Teresa of Avila, Ibn Arabi (Sufi mystic), Khalil Gibran, Buddha, and from the artist's own poetry. Nouhouhi's palette includes fiery reds and oranges, blues, browns, and one piece in black and grays. English translations are featured prominently, right next to the calligraphy. I might have preferred that the translation be more discreet, at the bottom of the page, so as not to detract from the artwork. But at least no one will have to hunt for the translation.
The background color for all the artwork and for the calendar itself is off-white, made to look textured like parchment. The calendar's squares have plenty of space to write in, though the date is at the center top of each square, opposed to the usual top corner. It has a lot of holidays labeled: Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist religious holidays, plus major American holidays, bank holidays, and major foreign holidays, especially for Canada and Mexico. The quality of the paper is very good for an inexpensive calendar, as I have found to be typical of Amber Lotus. But that means that the paper is slick and not as easy to write on as lower-quality paper would be. Interior pages are recycled paper, printed with soy-based inks.Breath of Words: The Arabic Calligraphy of Abd el Malik Nounouhi 2010 Wall Calendar OverviewInspired by this magnificentl and time-honored art form, Amber Lotus is proud to present Breath of Words: The Arabic Calligraphy of Abd el Malik Nounouhi. Each image in this beautiful wall calendar is a work of art made of words. Every calligraphy is accompanied by its translation, offering a stunning introduction to this divine art form. Nounouhi has developed a personal expression in his calligraphy, creating a world of colors where light and shadow are the basic structure."Calligraphy or El Khatt ('the trace' in Arabic) is a return to the source," says Nounouhi. "It is a look, a breath ... a trace of an internal story carried by words and carried to the surface of the paper by a breath, as if it were a voice. After all, calligraphy is the art of making one's words speak."

Dictionary of Muslim Philosophy Review1st ed. 1970; Institute of Islamic Culture; Lahore, Pakistan; 146 pages; paper dustjacket, hardback. From the dustjacket: "aims at giving reliable definitions and clear explanations of the major terms used in the Muslim philosophical and scholastic thought, more particularly of the terminology employed by the medieval Muslim thinkers in logic, psychology and metaphysics. Arranged according to Arabic alphabet, all terms have been transliterated into English." The Arabic word or term is presented, then translated into English pronunciation of that Arabic word, and followed with a 'transliteration' or explanation of the word or phrase. For example: ibda: "Creation from absolute nothingness; to be distinguished from the cognate terms khalq, takwin and ihdath, all of which presuppose the temporal priority of cause to effect. In ibda there is no priority of cause to effect; there is only priority in essence so that effect comes to be after not-being with a posteriority in essence. Ibda again is of higher order than ihdath or takwin in so far as it signifies granting existence without an intermediary, be it time or motion, or matter one or other of which is necessarily presupposed in ihdath and takwin. Further, ibda is specific to the creation on intelligences, khalq to that of the natural beings and takwin to that on the 'corruptible' among them." Each of the following phrases receives a one-sentence transliteration into English (but much-shortened here): jins al-agnas (genus of genera), al-jins al-tab (natural genus), aljins al-aqli (mental genus), al-jins al-mantiqi (logical genus). The three terms of a syllogism are noted, as well as syllogism involving conditional conjunctive proposition (al-shartiyat al-muttasilah) and enthymeme (al-qiyas al-mujiz) abridged syllogism, versus complex syllogism with major and minor premises, and yet not overlooking antecedent (al-muqaddam) or the consequent (tali). The four kinds of quantitative changes in a body are explained. Linear or unidirectional on-earth movements (al-harakat al-mustaqimah) are contrasted from those of heavenly bodies (al-harakat al-mustadirah). This book does not debate any philosophical differences between Shiite or Sunna philosophers. It defines. Various analogical reasonings are discussed. This book contains serious transliterations of serious philosophical stuff. If you are interested in this type of analysis being translated from Arabic into English, this much-to-short book is for you. Really a 5-star book, but only 4-stars for its brevity.Dictionary of Muslim Philosophy Overview

A Compendious Syriac Dictionary: Founded upon the Thesaurus Syriacus of R. Payne Smith ReviewThis is still the standard reference work for any serious Syriac scholars. It does not claim to be an exhaustive dictionary, but one is hard pressed to note any words not found in the Syriac Bible. The text is clearly printed in a Jacobite script with Estrangelo headers. Payne often shows alternative forms, and other common forms for each entry. The work by Jennings is also useful, but too brief and long out of print. This reprint of the expensive Oxford edition of Payne's work by Eisenbrauns, displays Eisenbraun's characteristic attention to quality: it is printed on acid-free paper and is smyth sewn. A fine hard back, and an essential tool for any serious student of the Syriac language or Syriac Bible.A Compendious Syriac Dictionary: Founded upon the Thesaurus Syriacus of R. Payne Smith Overview
